Disruptions to Railway Service Saturday 27 September to Sunday 5 October 2025

Work to rewire Gloucester signal box to keep trains running safely and smoothly for decades to come. The signalling system at Gloucester was installed in the 1960s and some components have now reached the end of their working life. We now need to replace 10,000 wires, more than 12 miles in total.

The signal box controls trains travelling from Bristol, Worcester, Swindon and south Wales, so it’s essential it remains in good working order.

We’ll be working from Saturday 27 September to Sunday 5 October, inclusive. During this time, buses will replace trains between Lydney, Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa.

On Saturday 27 September, Sunday 28 September, Saturday 4 October and Sunday 5 October, buses will also replace some trains between Worcester Foregate Street, Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Parkway, Gloucester and Swindon. Please visit gwr.com/upgrade for full details.

While the railway is temporarily closed, we’ll also complete some other tasks, such as clearing overgrown vegetation and improving stations.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience but this is essential work to ensure the continued reliability of the railway in Gloucestershire.
